What is CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle, light-touch therapy used to remove restrictions and tensions from the body by connecting with and listening to the CranioSacral System. The CranioSacral System encloses the central nervous system and consists of:

  • the cerebrospinal fluid which protects, nourishes and helps to detoxify the central nervous system

  • the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord

  • the bones of the head and the sacrum (triangular bone at the base of the spine) that support the membranes

CranioSacral Therapy uses the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid, which can be felt throughout the body, to evaluate the whole body for restrictions. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, practitioners release sutural restrictions in the cranium and restrictions in the fascia and soft tissue throughout the body. When restrictions are released, the nervous system is relaxed and the body’s natural healing capabilities are enhanced, which allows for improved function throughout the body. A healthy and relaxed nervous system is a key factor for good health. The CranioSacral System influences and is influenced by the Nervous System, the Musculoskeletal System, the Vascular System, the Lymphatic System, the Endocrine System, the Respiratory System and the Immune System and as such, CST has a wide scope of areas it can help.

SomatoEmotional Release is a therapeutic process for releasing suppressed emotions and trauma that may be stored in the body from past experiences. These emotional restrictions can cause disharmony within the body on a physical level and lower function in the area they are stored. Often if an injury or illness persists or re-occurs, it can be that the emotional aspect has not been released from the tissues.  Emotional release may unfold as the therapist listens to and follows the clients body and can bring about physical, mental and emotional harmony.

What can I expect in a session

During the first session I will take your medical history and discuss existing concerns. I will then start the CranioSacral Therapy work with you lying fully clothed on a plinth with your shoes and belt (if you are wearing one) removed. I will start by placing my hands on your feet and will then move to place my hands on different areas of the body depending on the restrictions the body is presenting e.g. under the sacrum, on the ribs, upper chest, pelvic area, head, ears, face. Children can lie on the plinth, sit / lie on the floor, sit on Mum or Dad’s lap or even play during a session!

As each body is individual, each person will experience their sessions in their own unique way. During a session you may feel subtle sensations / releases within the body, you may feel deeply relaxed, you may fall asleep, you may feel pain as restrictions release, your body may move as the tissues unwind and release, old memories may come to mind, you may experience an emotional release or you may feel nothing. Generally, people find the sessions deeply relaxing. Changes may continue to occur in the days following a CST session as your body continues to release and re-adjust.

Each session is specific to the person on that particular day and lasts one hour for adults and 45 minutes for children and babies.
